Minister For Sports Sends Message To Family And Friends After The Death Of Nigerian Boxer

A Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, has died after a boxing match in Ghana. He was fighting against a Ghanaian boxer, Jon Mbanugu, at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on Saturday, March 31, 2025.

Oluwasegun was a former champion in his weight class. During the third round of the fight, he lost consciousness and fell to the ground. Medical staff gave him first aid, and then he was rushed to the hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead just 30 minutes after arriving at the hospital.

The Ghana Boxing Authority confirmed the news of his death. The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control is very sad about what happened. They described Oluwasegun as a “brave” fighter who died doing what he loved.

Oluwasegun had fought in 23 matches before his last fight. He won 13 times and lost eight times. The boxing community is mourning his death, and his family is receiving support during this difficult time.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Iddie Adams, sent a heartfelt message to the Nigerian boxing community, friends, and family of Oluwasegun. He expressed his sadness and shock at the news of the boxer’s death.

The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control has promised to support Oluwasegun’s family during this difficult time. They will make sure that the family receives the help they need.
