President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised that his government will not tolerate actions by selfish individuals that jeopardise the safety and well-being of Ghanaians, especially concerning the recurring flooding issues.

Speaking at the Black Star Square during the Eid Mubarak celebrations on Monday, March 31, 2025, the president disclosed that he is aware of some private developers collaborating with chiefs who sell Ramsayer sites to them, resulting in the construction of illegal buildings in areas designated for water retention.

“I’m aware of instances where private businesses colluding with some chiefs are turning water retention areas, Ramsayer sites into built up zones. Let me be clear, this must stop,” he warned.

Warning of strong and decisive actions against such individuals and private developers, he stated that persons who are found culpable of flouting the directives will be severely dealt with.

Also, he said such structures built along waterways and water retention areas will be demolished.

“Those structures will be pulled down and we will not allow a few selfish individuals to endanger the lives and livelihoods of countless others. The law will be enforced and those who flout it will face the consequences,” he said.

President Mahama attributed the frequent flooding issues in the country to the blatant disregard of regulations and environmental safety by some individuals, at the detriment of the broader population.

“This reckless disregard for planning regulations and environmental safety is a major contributor to the devastating floods that continue to plague our communities.”

He assured of his administration’s commitment to addressing the flooding issues in the country.
