Nii Amaa Ollennu is a unique figure in Ghana’s history, known for serving the shortest presidency—just 24 days. He was appointed president on April 27, 1966, following the overthrow of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in a coup led by the National Liberation Council (NLC). This military and police-led takeover accused Nkrumah of ruling as a dictator.
Following the coup, the NLC assumed control and selected Nii Amaa Ollennu as head of state. Unlike the military leaders behind the coup, Ollennu was a distinguished lawyer and academic rather than a soldier. His appointment was largely ceremonial, with real political power resting in the hands of the military leadership.
Though his presidency lasted only 24 days, it was significant because he oversaw the transition from Nkrumah’s government to military rule. As the first leader to take office after Nkrumah’s removal, Ollennu played a crucial role in maintaining stability. Beyond his brief presidency, he was widely respected for his contributions to Ghana’s legal system and education sector.
On May 24, 1966, Ollennu resigned from his position, and Colonel Joseph Arthur Ankrah became the chairman of the NLC, taking full control of Ghana’s leadership.
Although his time in office was short, Nii Amaa Ollennu is remembered for his role during a pivotal moment in Ghana’s political transformation. His leadership provided a sense of order in a time of major national change.
