The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central has accused the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of deliberately neglecting ambulances procured under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
In a post on X, the MP criticized the Akufo-Addo-led government for allegedly leaving the vehicles unused for eight years to justify awarding a new contract to their preferred contractors. He claimed that instead of being deployed to save lives, the ambulances were left to deteriorate at the Air Force Base.
The MP also condemned the prosecution of ex-Minority Leader and current Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, arguing that the charges were fabricated to cover up the deliberate abandonment of the vehicles.
Background of the Ambulance Controversy
Between 2014 and 2016, the NDC government, through then-Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, procured 200 ambulances from Dubai-based Big Sea General Trading Limited. However, upon delivery, the NPP administration claimed the vehicles were unfit for medical emergencies, describing them as “ordinary vans” rather than properly equipped ambulances.
This led to a legal battle in which Dr. Ato Forson and businessman Richard Jakpa were charged with causing a €2.37 million financial loss to the state. In July 2024, the Court of Appeal dismissed the charges, and by January 2025, the Attorney-General formally dropped the case.
The Gomoa Central MP is now demanding accountability, urging the public to visit the Air Force Base, where the ambulances reportedly remain unused. His post has reignited debate over the procurement and the alleged politicization of the case.
