Former Ghana international Sammy Kuffour has expressed his dissatisfaction with the inconsistent handling of the Black Stars captaincy, calling for a more structured and stable leadership approach.
The captaincy debate has been a persistent issue within the national team, with the latest development seeing Jordan Ayew assume the role despite initial reports suggesting Thomas Partey was in contention. Previously, Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku were also considered, while Andre Ayew, the designated captain, has yet to officially retire.
Kuffour highlighted a similar controversy in 2019 when Asamoah Gyan was stripped of the captaincy ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, with Andre Ayew subsequently taking over. He believes such abrupt changes create unnecessary tensions within the squad.
“We make [Black Stars captaincy] too complicated. It wasn’t the right decision to take the armband from Asamoah Gyan. As part of the NC committee, I said, ‘Let Gyan remain captain since he had only a few months left.’ We didn’t need to create tension for Dede or make Gyan feel isolated. A coach has to choose the [Black Stars] captain, and not the FA,” Kuffour told *Sporty FM*.
Despite the ongoing debate, Jordan Ayew has made a promising start as captain, leading Ghana to consecutive victories against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, contributing one goal and four assists.
