Kuami Eugene, a well-known Ghanaian musician, has revealed that his collaboration with Sarkodie on the 2020 song Happy Day continues to harm his career.
Speaking with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM, Eugene voiced his frustration over the lasting backlash he has faced due to the song. Many listeners interpreted the track as an endorsement of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President Nana Akufo-Addo, a perception that has negatively affected him. According to Pulse Ghana, Eugene clarified that he was unaware of any political connotations when he was invited to feature on the song. He explained that Sarkodie’s team initially presented a different concept, but after he recorded the chorus, the final message of the song took a direction that some saw as politically motivated.
“I’m still suffering from it,” Eugene admitted, stating that he continues to face criticism and scrutiny. Despite his attempts to distance himself from any political affiliations, the controversy persists. He reiterated that he has no political ties and regrets the unintended consequences of the collaboration.
The situation surrounding Happy Day illustrates the challenges artists encounter when their work is linked to politics. Eugene’s experience highlights the importance of clear communication in collaborations and the risks musicians face in politically charged environments. It also serves as a lesson on how public perception can shape an artist’s career, with even unintended associations leading to long-term consequences.
