The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor has vowed to ensure that the management and head of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) under whose watch over 1300 containers belonging to the company got stolen at the Tema Port are held accountable.

Operatives of the National Security have arrested eight Chinese nationals and a Ghanaian in connection with the disappearance of the containers.

The arrests come after cables believed to be part of the missing consignment were traced to an aluminum smelter owned by the Chinese at Shai Hills.

The latest crackdown follows an ongoing investigation into the missing ECG containers scandal, where over 1,300 containers filled with cables and essential electrical equipment were reported unaccounted for.

Energy Minister John Jinapor earlier confirmed to TV3 on Thursday, March 27, that authorities had retrieved 40 of the missing containers at a terminal in Kpone. He disclosed that an Indian national had been taken into custody in connection with the case.

Speaking to the media, John Jinapor stated that everyone who is complicit in this case will not escape arrest and prosecution.

“I am writing to the Attorney General. Whoever superintended over this mess will be held liable. The management then and the head of ECG. He has to provide justification for why you will procure 8 billion when you were supposed to procure 1.3 billion. If they had stuck to their procurement plan, we won’t have this problem.”

He minister further set the record straight that the containers got stolen before the Mahama administration came to power.

“Let me make it clear, those who are claiming that the containers stolen when we came to office, that is false. As you can see here, they are confessing that they started buying these cables right from 2019. So the attempt to usually play the political football will not wash. Whoever is responsible, we will apprehend that person.

And to those criminals you can engage in your social media shenanigans, social media gimmicks and try to play NDC/NPP politics. The law is no respecter of political parties and we will come after you. We will get you, prosecute you and deal with you and when we are doing that, let no one come and say we are engaged in witch-hunting.” John Jinapor stated.
