Edudzi Tamakloe, in a recent interview, questioned the rationale behind freezing Ken Ofori-Atta’s entire bank account, arguing that it was an unreasonable action.
“There’s something significant about this case—Ofori-Atta stayed in Ghana throughout Nana Akufo-Addo’s eight-year tenure. The issue here is that he has not been found guilty; he is only under investigation. So far, his treatment has been fair. But freezing an individual’s bank account for an entire year is extreme. If the suspicion is about a specific ₵23,000 transaction, then only that sum should be frozen, not his whole account. Holding back all his funds for a year is simply irrational. We saw similar incidents under Akufo-Addo’s administration, but back then, we were told it was all in the name of upholding the rule of law.”
He then questioned whether any part of the current proceedings was unlawful. Tamakloe recalled that Akufo-Addo had justified creating the Special Prosecutor’s Office to eliminate political bias in prosecutions, stating that cases previously handled by the Attorney General often had political undertones. The intention, Akufo-Addo had claimed, was to ensure that investigations conducted by this office would not be seen as politically motivated.
Tamakloe highlighted that the same Special Prosecutor’s Office was now investigating Ofori-Atta. “Akufo-Addo established this office to ensure impartial investigations. Now that the same office is probing the former finance minister, we should allow it to function without interference,” he said.
TV3 Ghana shared the video clip of his interview on Instagram on Monday, March 17, 2025, triggering significant public discussions.
