Former Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has lauded the positive influence of former national team players Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan on the current Black Stars squad. Speaking to Asempa FM, Akonnor highlighted the significant boost in confidence and leadership their presence provides.
Stephen Appiah, who currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the team’s Management Committee with an oversight on player relations, and Asamoah Gyan, though without an official role, have been actively involved with the team. Gyan was notably present during Ghana’s recent resounding victories against Chad (5-0) in Accra and Madagascar (3-0) in Morocco as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Akonnor emphasized the invaluable contribution of these former captains, stating, “The inclusion of former players, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan, has positively impacted the team, boosting confidence with their experience and leadership.” Their wealth of knowledge and understanding of the game at the highest level is seen as a crucial asset in guiding and motivating the current generation of players.
The involvement of such iconic figures is expected to create a stronger bond between the past and present of Ghanaian football, fostering a sense of unity and shared ambition as the Black Stars aim for success in upcoming competitions.
