During his Good Evening Ghana show on January 28, 2025, renowned media host Paul Adom-Ochere highlighted the necessity for politicians to exhibit mutual respect in order to earn credibility and admiration from the public. He addressed a viral video featuring a verbal clash between Emefa Hardcastle, the acting Managing Director of the Petroleum Commission, and Hon. Annoh Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri.
Although Adom-Ochere did not hold Mrs. Hardcastle solely responsible, he suggested that her apparent disregard for the MP stemmed from a growing tendency among politicians to view their rivals as untrustworthy. He attributed this perception to politicians themselves, who frequently accuse each other of dishonesty. He argued that if they want the public to respect them, they must stop branding one another as corrupt.
Adom-Ochere praised Hon. Annoh Dompreh for his restraint in handling the situation and lauded Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, for backing his colleague and preserving parliamentary decorum. He expressed concern that the Appointments Committee, which should serve as a means of fostering political reconciliation post-elections, had instead become a stage for conflict in this instance.
Reflecting on a statement made by the late Hon. J.H. Mensah in 1997 about the potential decline of Parliament’s respect under the new constitution, Adom-Ochere stressed the importance of reinforcing Parliament’s authority. He insisted that ongoing efforts must be made to restore its stature and ensure it commands the respect it deserves.
