Collapsed solar panel roof at the A&C Mall
The Vice President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana, Stephen Kwarteng Yeboah, is calling for a review of the country’s insurance policies.
His call comes in the wake of heavy rains accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, which led to the collapse of a solar panel shed at the A&C Mall carport.
The storm caused significant damage to over 80 vehicles and adjacent properties, raising concerns over liability and insurance coverage for affected individuals and businesses.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, as monitored by GhanaWeb Business, Yeboah explained that compensation for vehicle damage depends on the type of insurance policy held by the owner.
“If you have comprehensive insurance, your policy will cover natural disasters like this. However, if you only have third-party liability insurance, you won’t receive compensation for damages to your own vehicle,” he stated.
He also noted that buildings and structures damaged in the storm could be covered under fire insurance policies if they include allied perils.
Additionally, he warned that businesses failing to comply with these insurance requirements could face legal consequences, including custodial sentences for directors and financial penalties ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 penalty units.
