When the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Nanton spoke for the first time on the House’s floor, everyone in the room was taken aback. The MP, after a prolonged wait for recognition, expressed gratitude upon finally catching the Speaker’s attention.
“Thank you, Mr. Speaker. It has been a very long road trying to catch your eye. It seems Mr. Speaker either looks to the left or right, but never in the middle. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the statement made by…,” the MP remarked.
“Is this your first time speaking?” the Speaker asked, seemingly unaware that the MP had never spoken before. to which the MP confirmed with a simple “Yes.”
The exchange drew laughter from the chamber, highlighting the challenges some MPs face in getting the Speaker’s attention during debates. The Nanton MP’s contribution marked his official engagement in parliamentary discourse, setting the stage for his future participation in legislative matters.
The incident also sparked reactions from the public. Social media users discussed the MP’s inaugural speech. One user, Luayengwan Nagbil Nyagre, commented, “Most of the Kumasi MPs are only known in their constituency,” suggesting that some lawmakers remain relatively unnoticed at the national level.
