A senior member of the New Patriotic Party and former Member of Parliament, Hon. Kwadwo Adjei Darko, has warned that the party risks becoming like the Convention People’s Party (CPP) if certain individuals within the party attempt to impose a flagbearer on the party in the 2028 elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Kurkurantumi program, Hon. Adjei dismissed the influence of Prof. Mike Oquaye’s election report, stating that it cannot be used to push the party into endorsing a candidate against the will of members. He said there are some people are also conducting report secretly and will be used to compare the work of Mike Oquaye.
“Where we’ve reached, we will not allow anybody to impose a flagbearer on the party. The imposition of a flagbearer will result in inevitable division. Unlike previous years when people were imposed on us, this time, if anyone tries that, the party will become like CPP” he warned.
He attributed the party’s internal struggles to the creation of a super delegate system, which he believes has been used as a tool for manipulation. According to him, the sacking of former NPP chairman Paul Afoko and ex-General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong after President Kufour’s tenure marked the beginning of the party’s internal issues.
He said upto date no one has been able to give reasons why those people were sacked. He therefore called for electoral reforms within the party, advocating for a system that prioritise the voices of constituents over select delegates.
“We were planning that our electoral college system should focus on the constituent’s voice rather than delegates. Leaders must sit and check where we can review the constitution to allow more members involvement.” He said.
