According to GhanaWeb, the detention of broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has sparked strong criticism from John Darko, the Member of Parliament for Suame and a legal representative for the Minority caucus.
John Darko has raised concerns about the justification for the arrest and the manner in which Afrifa-Mensah was treated while in custody.
During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, he expressed his disapproval of the actions taken by national security, particularly their claim that Afrifa-Mensah was being held to assist in efforts against illegal mining.
He questioned the grounds for the arrest, highlighting that the broadcaster was allegedly kept in custody for several hours under the pretense of aiding national security in addressing illegal mining.
Darko further criticized the explanation provided, arguing that it exposed a lack of accountability and proper planning within the national security apparatus.
He suggested that authorities resorted to this reasoning only after realizing their mistake, asserting that there was no legitimate basis for detaining Afrifa-Mensah.
“You know why they are saying this—because they realized that they had goofed so much. There was no reason to arrest the gentleman,” he said.
