Leader of the Minority Caucus in Parliament Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has provided details into an attempted arrest by operatives of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) of the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi.

On March 7, 2025, attempts by NIB operatives to effect an arrest of the New Patriotic Party’s MP in his constituency proved futile following heavy resistance from constituents and supporters of the lawmaker.

The attempted arrest was related to a bench warrant issued by the Koforidua High Court for contempt, citing his defiance of an injunction on his swearing-in.

Speaking on the incident, Afenyo-Markin stated that security operatives raided Ernest Kumi’s constituency and allegedly subjected him to harassment.

He added that the armed operatives, who arrived in pickup vehicles, allegedly pulled a gun on Kumi to threaten him and attempted to force him into their vehicle after he resisted.

“State security operatives were harassing the Member of Parliament in his constituency, but for the intervention of his constituents. They were armed with pickup vehicles. They actually pulled weapons on the MP trying to threaten him to force him into the pickup,” he detailed.

Condemning the incident, Afenyo-Markin questioned the legality and constitutionality of the NIB’s actions in their attempted arrests when according to him, court orders cannot be enforced by NIB.

He explained that per the country’s laws and regulations, when a court order is issued, it is for the registrar to assign a court bailiff to enforce the order, also adding that the Supreme Court had frozen the order from the High Court.

Afenyo-Markin accused the government of colluding with the Koforidua High Court to violate the country’s laws and act on their own rules.

“Clearly there is collusion between the government and the High Court in Koforidua to use their own set of laws in our country. How can the minister tell us that the court order could be enforced by the National Security Coordinators rep in Eastern Region? And the rep, upon receipt of the so-called court order, also forwarded it to the National Investigation Bureau.

“With the greatest respect, that is not how our laws work. When there is a court order, it is for the Registrar to assign a bailiff for the purposes of enforcing the order. This was a situation where the Supreme Court had already frozen the enforcement of that order,” he explained.

Afenyo-Markin hinted at his side’s readiness to file for the Attorney General to provide answers on the incident.
