Liverpool enter a much-needed international break as Arne Slot’s players look to recover from a difficult week. The Reds crashed out of the Champions League on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain last Tuesday to end their treble dreams.

Then, their hopes of a domestic double were dashed after a limp 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday. Liverpool were second best to Eddie Howe’s team, who won their first major domestic trophy in 70 years.

But there is still plenty to play for this season, with a record-equalling 20th top-flight title on the horizon. Liverpool sit 12 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with history now within their grasp. With all that said, below are some of the latest media reports from around Anfield.

Transfer claim

German publication Bild claim that Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong is being eyed for a summer transfer to strengthen the Reds’ squad. Under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso, Frimpong has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s success, notably during their unbeaten Bundesliga victory last season.

The report further claims that Slot and Frimpong, both Dutch, communicate regularly and have a good relationship.

Merson plea

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has pleaded for perspective on Liverpool’s difficult week.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “That was a tough week for Liverpool but let’s get it in perspective, if someone said at the start of the season Liverpool would be champions, you wouldn’t have believed them, would you?

“When you sit down in the cold light of day, if you’re a Liverpool fan or player, the Premier League is the Holy Grail. Particularly for a club like Liverpool, with a rich history in the Champions League, if you were given a choice about what silverware to claim this term? Hands down, it’s gotta be the Premier League. It’s the Holy Grail.

“They won it last time in lockdown. It wasn’t the same. Their fans weren’t there. And their fans will be there this time when they pick it up. So let’s not look shy about how great they’ve done. They’ve lost one game in the league. They’ve just had a bad week. To lose one game in the Premier League is just mind-blowing. I think everybody’s got to just get it in perspective.”
