Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the three-month-old National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would suffer a massive defeat if another election were held in Ghana.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the Minority Leader accused the government of John Dramani Mahama of failing to keep its promises to the Ghanaian people.
While daring the NDC to an election contest, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effutu said the ruling party would not only lose a presidential election in such an instance, but would also suffer a massive defeat in a parliamentary contest.
“You’ve not kept your promises; this government is even becoming a lame duck. If elections are held today, you will lose. If elections are held today, you will become the Minority; your Majority will go down to less than 100. If you like, declare an election. Let the president declare an election, and you will see,” he stated.
He noted that contrary to their numerous promises, the NDC has failed to fulfill their pledges, specifically in the 2025 Budget.
Ghana’s 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections were held on December 7, 2024, marking the ninth general election since the country adopted the 1992 Constitution, ushering in the Fourth Republic.
The presidential race featured 12 candidates, though it was primarily a contest between former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
John Mahama won decisively with 56.55% of the votes, avoiding a runoff, while Bawumia conceded defeat the following day after polls closed.
In the parliamentary elections, the NDC secured a landslide victory, winning 183 seats, while the NPP took 88, and independent candidates claimed 4 seats. One seat remains outstanding, due to an electoral dispute.
The four independent candidates elected to caucus with the NDC during the inauguration of the 9th Parliament on January 6, 2025.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, presented the government’s first budget to Parliament on March 11, 2025, where he announced the abolition of a number of taxes in fulfillment of his party’s promises.
However, the opposition NPP has raised issues with the contents of the budget, noting that it does not reflect existing realities and fails to recognise the efforts and successes of the previous government.
