The Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP), Dr. George Domfe, has argued that many manufacturing companies prefer foreign nationals over Ghanaians because the latter are not trustworthy.

According to him, Ghanaian employees have a reputation for stealing from their employers and that serves as a disincentive for employers to engage them.

Speaking to GhanaWeb Business on the sidelines of the UPSA-IERPP Post Budget Forum in Accra on March 14, 2025, Dr. Domfe noted that this attitude towards work is one of the reasons for the high unemployment rate in the country.

“Ghanaian workers are not truthful. Once you engage them and they begin to work for you, they don’t think of the work. It’s always about their pockets. So if it is a manufacturing company, they will steal,” he stated.

He added that most of these manufacturing companies employ Indians and other foreign nationals because they are perceived to be truthful and trustworthy.

Dr. Domfe further indicated that many Ghanaians have become economically inactive because they are not actively seeking jobs, despite being ready to work.

As of 2025, Ghana’s unemployment rate was pegged at 3.90 percent. This was contained in a release by Trading Economics.

In addition to this, Dr. Domfe pointed out that the private sector faces several challenges, including the high cost of electricity and access to credit facilities.

He called on the government to address these challenges to enable the private sector to grow and expand, ultimately creating more employment opportunities.
