A tech consultant, Kobby Spiky is calling for regular security audits and enhanced tech education within President Mahama’s tech team following the recent hacking of his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

President John Mahama’s X account was reportedly compromised in the early hours of March 17, 2025, though it was quickly restored.

The specifics of the hack remain unclear, but unauthorized individuals temporarily gained control of the account.

During the breach, the president’s X account was used to promote meme coins, with a post stating, “Ghana is leading the way for Africa’s fintech sector by making payments fast and free across the continent, with support from Solana and the Bank of Ghana through the Solanafrica project. We look forward to other African nations joining us soon. Support Solanafrica by purchasing the Solanafrica memecoin, which helps cover transaction fees.”

In an interview with GhanaWeb Business, tech consultant Kobby Spiky pointed out that such incidents often occur when multiple individuals have access to the president’s account.

He emphasised that the weakest link in any hacking incident is typically human error, underscoring the need for stricter security protocols.

“These things happen when multiple people handle an account. The weakest link in any hacking incident is usually human error, people are often too trusting and can make simple mistakes that give hackers access to a system.”

He further stressed the importance of frequent security audits to prevent such breaches.

“There should be regular security audits ideally every week to review account activity and check where logins are coming from. In fact, if possible, this should be done daily. Always check emails sent from the account, as hackers can gain access and remain dormant for months or even years, waiting for the right time to attack. Continuous monitoring is essential,” he added.

Spiky also noted that incidents like this could significantly impact the fintech space by undermining trust in digital financial platforms.
