The Director of Communications for the 2024 Presidential Campaign of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has stated his readiness to take responsibility for the defeat of the New Patriotic Party in the general election.
Speaking in a recent interview with Kwame Nkrumah Tikese of Okay FM, Miracles stated that while he believes that no member of the party, including leaders, bears sole responsibility for the party’s defeat, he is willing to accept blame if that is what will help members recover from the loss.
“I don’t think that as party people, we should be pointing fingers. But what I have said is that if pointing fingers at a party official is what will make you feel better, direct it at me and no one else. I was part of the leadership of the campaign, so if you are looking for someone to blame, direct it at me and let’s leave everyone else out so that we can help each other,” he stated.
He noted that some of the accusations in light of the party’s defeat are rather misplaced, as some fundamental issues contributed to Ghanaians voting out the NPP and not necessarily the actions and inactions of party and former government officials.
“Everyone you hear talking thinks they are right; they believe everybody else is responsible for our defeat but themselves, but I don’t believe in that. All of a sudden, when we lose an election, everyone is wise; they all know the best political strategy we should have adopted to win, they were the repository of that knowledge, and yet no one listened to them. I don’t believe in that. I believe that we win together and we lose together. I believe that from the polling station to the constituency to the national leadership, everyone played their role as they should. It just didn’t work for us,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia polled 4,877,611 votes (41.75%) against the winner of the 2024 Election, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, who polled 6,591,790 (56.42%).
Aside from losing the presidential race, the NPP lost significantly to the NDC in the parliamentary contest.
The defeat of the NPP has led to aggrieved party members attributing the loss to various factors, including individual actions and inactions of party leaders and members of the erstwhile government.
