Rains destroy billboard featuring banner of NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie
Heavy rains and a windstorm in Accra and other parts of the country on March 13, 2025, have caused significant damage in several areas.
A billboard featuring the ‘Thank You’ banner of Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 Parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, was damaged by the heavy rains.
The billboard was uprooted and fell onto the pavement beneath the traffic lights at Kwashieman, within the constituency.
Meanwhile, another ‘Thank You’ billboard featuring the image of her opponent, Ewurabena Aubynn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 Parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, remained unaffected despite both billboards being situated side by side.
The incident has sparked humorous reactions from constituents, with some suggesting that the destruction of Owusu Afriyie’s billboard by the storm signifies her rejection by the people.
Some have further speculated that Aubynn’s banner remaining intact despite the strong winds and heavy rains is a symbolic sign that she rightfully and legitimately won the election, as she “withstood the challenges.”
Both Ewurabena Aubynn and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie are currently awaiting the final court ruling on the election outcome. Initially, the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Aubynn the winner of the parliamentary seat.
Both candidates have since rejected the declarations, with the NDC contesting the results in court.
