The new IGP, COP Tetteh Yohuno will be sworn on March 14,2025
The spokesperson for the President, Felix Ofosu-Kwakye, has announced that the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) will be sworn into office on March 14, 2025, to oversee the administration of the Ghana Police Service and enhance security operations in the country.
This follows the President’s appointment of Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new IGP, replacing COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on March 14, 2025, Ofosu-Kwakye stated that the new IGP would officially assume office after being sworn in, allowing for a smooth transition and ensuring the effective management of the Police Service.
Commenting on the backlash on social media regarding the removal of the current IGP, he noted that it was not unusual for a government to appoint a new IGP to oversee a state institution.
He further explained that an IGP does not need to commit any wrongdoing to be replaced, emphasising that the decision was made by the President in accordance with the law.
“The new IGP will be sworn in tomorrow at 11:00 AM, and an IGP does not need to commit a crime before being replaced. Moreover, this is not the first time, and it certainly won’t be the last,” he said.
He commended the new IGP on his appointment, describing him as the most qualified candidate in the Police Service.
He added that COP Yohuno has consistently demonstrated the competence needed to lead the service and drive its transformation into a modern, efficient, and strengthened institution.
Meanwhile, IMANI Ghana, along with security expert Professor Kwesi Aning, has filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the President from removing IGP Dampare and other heads of security agencies ahead of a pending ruling scheduled for May 2025.
In their suit, they argue that the removal of the security heads is unfair treatment by the President.
The appointment was formally announced in a statement by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Ofosu-Kwakye.
The statement, in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, confirmed the appointment.
“President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.
“He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. COP Yohuno brings 40 years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read.
