Five people have lost their lives, and several others sustained serious injuries following a violent clash between two rival groups of illegal timber loggers at Sefwi Agyemandiem in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region, MyJoyOnline reports.
The confrontation, which occurred early Tuesday morning, was reportedly triggered by disputes over control of key logging areas in the forest.
Sources indicate that both groups had been engaged in illegal timber harvesting, a growing concern in the region.
According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated when members of the groups armed with machetes, pump-action guns, and other tools used in their operations attacked each other.
During the violence, a Mitsubishi pickup truck (registration number GE 9075-17) was set on fire.
The deceased, believed to be from one of the groups, has not yet been officially identified.
Police have since been deployed to restore order, transport the bodies, and investigate the incident.
Those injured have been taken to the Sefwi Asawinso Hospital for treatment.
