“Why Would We Give Mahama Breathing Space?” — NPP’s Ellen Daaku Questions

Ellen Ama Daaku, a member of the National Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made it clear that the party will closely scrutinize the administration of President John Dramani Mahama as reported by Ghana Web.

She insists the NPP will not offer the new government any “breathing space” when it comes to delivering on its promises.

Speaking on Peace FM, Daaku stressed that President Mahama assured Ghanaians of his ability to manage the country effectively during his campaign and must now live up to those expectations.

“If we in the NPP say we will give John Mahama a breathing space, then we will be telling a lie. We shall not give him that space. Why would we?” she questioned.

She argued that Mahama’s return to power came with great expectations, especially given his claims of experience and readiness. “You sat at home for eight years and observed what went on under the Akufo-Addo administration.

You convinced Ghanaians to bring you back to power, and they did. Now that you are in power, what breathing space do you need?” she asked.

President Mahama, who was sworn in on January 7, 2025, has already taken steps to fulfill some campaign promises.

He has established a lean government with 60 ministers and scrapped taxes like the E-Levy and betting tax, which many citizens considered burdensome.

Despite these early efforts, the NPP remains committed to holding him accountable.

According to Daaku, the time for speeches is over — it’s now time for action. “Enough of the talking, Mr. President. Get to work,” she urged.

Mahama’s term runs until 2028, and the coming months will likely see continued scrutiny from the opposition.
