Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin (L) and Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, took a swipe at the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, during a parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, March 12, 2025, after the latter attempted to challenge his ruling.
Afenyo-Markin, who is the Member of Parliament for Effutu, expressed his displeasure after the Speaker interrupted him during a discussion on the floor.
“When you ask me a question and I’m answering, then you come in with, ‘Are you debating the Speaker?’ Mr. Speaker, there was a discussion. The Majority Leader had an opportunity to share his side of the story.
“And I’m also making my point. Then you come in, and the next moment, it is filibustering,” he fumed.
However, Speaker Alban Bagbin was unimpressed with his complaints and did not allow him to complete his statement.
The Speaker accused the Minority Leader of consistently challenging his rulings. He then took a swipe at the Effutu legislator, suggesting that he was behaving like a Gen-Z.
“Minority Leader, when you respond this way, it’s not fair… When I state my ruling, that is final. When you get up and raise the same issue again, you are debating me.
“The ruling is clear, and once I state it, that ends the matter. You can disagree with it, and you know what the standing orders say you can do. You must file a substantive motion. Please, you are not part of Gen-Z.”
The term Gen-Z refers to individuals born between 1997 and 2012.
