A coalition of New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth groups in the Nanton Constituency of the Northern Region has locked up the constituency office of the party in protest against the suspension of 34 NPP members in the area.

The youth groups argue that the suspensions are not in the best interest of the party and could harm its future in the constituency.

Tensions have been brewing within the party’s ranks in Nanton after Constituency Chairman Abukari Inusah announced the suspension of the 34 members, including businessman and NPP financier Mohammed Saha Naa, on Monday.

The party accused the suspended members—including polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives—of supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate instead of the NPP’s candidate.

However, the angry youth groups, who stormed the constituency office a day after the announcement and locked it up, told journalists that the suspensions were unnecessary.

Ibrahim Abdul Fatawu, Secretary of the coalition, stated that what the party needed now was to rebuild and unite its base instead of issuing suspensions.

“The NPP lost both the general and parliamentary elections in the Nanton Constituency during the 2024 elections. At this critical time, the party’s focus should be on rebuilding, uniting its members, and strategizing to recapture power in 2028. Suspending dedicated party members, especially without due process, only deepens divisions and weakens the party’s strength in the constituency,” he said.

He accused the Constituency Executive Committee, led by the Chairman, of not giving the suspended members a fair hearing before making the decision.

“As a democratic party that upholds the rule of law and justice, it is unacceptable to suspend members without allowing them to defend themselves against the allegations made against them,” Abdul Fatawu noted.

The Secretary also questioned why the party would suspend its financier, who, he claimed, had provided immense financial and logistical support during last year’s campaign season.

“We, therefore, demand that the suspension letter be revoked immediately and without further delay,” the youth groups demanded.
