Joe Louis is a former player of Asante Kotoko
Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Joe Louis has opened up about the struggles of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), stating that these challenges discourage players from choosing to stay in the country over moving abroad.
Speaking in an interview with Kessben TV, Louis expressed his love for the talent in the GPL but admitted he does not want young players to endure the same difficulties he faced.
“I wish our league was filled with top-notch players, but I don’t want them to go through the same struggles I faced. It’s heartbreaking to see talented players discouraged and potentially turning to destructive habits,” he said.
He further revealed that his inability to earn much in the GPL, despite his long career, motivates him to encourage young players to explore opportunities outside Ghana.
“That’s why I always advise young players to prioritize their financial well-being. When choosing a team, consider the wages and opt for the best offer. Even if the pay is good in Ghana, don’t spend your entire career here—explore opportunities abroad,” he added.
Nonetheless, Louis urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to reform the GPL to ensure the country can retain its talent.
“I urge the Football Association to work towards creating a better environment for our talented players. Ghana has so much potential—let’s nurture it,” he further stated.
