Media personality Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady
Media personality Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has strongly criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the collapse of Ghana Airways and the sale of state-owned factories during their time in power.
Her statements are in response to a question from former Ghana Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr. Tony Aidoo, during the recently held National Economic Dialogue.
Dr. Aidoo, during the economic dialogue, questioned why Ethiopian Airlines, which started operating in the same year as Ghana Airways, now has hundreds of aircraft while Ghana Airways is no longer in operation.
But Vim Lady, speaking on this development during her show, placed the blame squarely on the NDC administration under former President Rawlings, accusing them of mismanaging the state airline and other state assets.
“Why is Tony Aidoo asking us this? When it comes to this issue, the biggest culprit was the NDC under President Rawlings,” she said.
“When the NDC took power, Ghana Airways was worth $100 million. What happened? Tony Aidoo should be telling us. They destroyed it,” she added.
She also criticised the NDC for establishing the Divestiture Implementation Committee (DIC), which was responsible for overseeing the sale of factories established under Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
“KSM was asking the other time why we sold all our factories, and they were turned into churches.
“Ask the NDC under President Rawlings why they set up the Divestiture Implementation Committee and sold off Nkrumah’s factories. What due diligence did they do before such actions? Now there are no jobs for the youth,” she lamented.
Vim Lady also defended the legacy of former Head of State General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong and questioned the reasoning behind his execution in 1979.
“Yet when they labelled Zanetor as the daughter of a murderer, they were crying. Even though Zanetor is not responsible for her father’s actions, it’s not a lie that Rawlings killed people.
“Look at what Acheampong did; he implemented Operation Feed Yourself, he founded Dansoman estates, and he tried to make Ghana a better place. Even Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah stated that when Acheampong was shot, not even coins were found in his pockets,” she added.
