Liverpool-bound Giorgi Mamardashvili makes brutally honest admission ahead of move

Giorgi Mamardashvili has admitted he is in poor form as he prepares for his summer move to Liverpool.

Mamardashvili is currently on loan at Valencia after completing a £25million deal to join Arne Slot’s side from the La Liga team in the summer. The Georgia international built a stellar reputation with Los Che but has found things more difficult amid Valencia’s struggles this term.

The side are battling to avoid relegation and Mamardashvili has been kept busy but has also found his own difficulties protecting his net. Against Real Valladolid on Saturday, the shotstopper made a poor pass that was intercepted Juanmi Latasa, who went on to level the score at the Mestalla in the 40th minute.

The Liverpool loanee’s blushes were spared as Umar Sadiq scored a second-half winner for Valencia, but that did not prevent Mamardashvili from owning up to his poor form. He plans to bounce back from it however.

“I know I’m not in my best moment now, but I’m convinced that challenges make us stronger,” Mamardashvili posted on Instagram.

“I’m putting in my best effort to be the best version of me as soon as possible. Thank you very much, Mestalla, for the support! Today’s victory is very important for us and gives us energy to continue. Up all the way!”

Mamardashvili will not face an easy task when he arrives at Anfield in the summer. Alisson Becker is likely to stand in his way, though the Brazilian’s future is far from certain with his deal currently set to expire in 2027.

The Reds goalkeeper produced an outstanding performance to help Liverpool defeat Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League meeting and continues to play to an elite level at 32. Slot has already told Mamardashivili, who was seventh in the Yashin Trophy standings last year, to expect competition.

“I think he is at Valencia and they are in just as important a phase of the season as we are in, so it wouldn’t be smart for me to talk about a player that maybe belongs to us but is in such an important part of the season at Valencia,” Slot said.

“But in general I can say if you want to play for Liverpool, you have to accept that there is competition. That is not only Liverpool but that is in every Premier League club at the moment because of all the money that is in this league but in Liverpool if you don’t want to face competition then it is not the best place to go to.”

Alisson however, was involved in a mix-up of his own this weekend. Miscommunication between Virgil van Dijk and the goalkeeper allowed Southampton to take a surprise lead before the Reds secured victory.
