Justice Abeeku Newton-Offei, a former presidential staffer under ex-President Akufo-Addo, has voiced strong criticism of Despite Media Group for what he views as its betrayal of veteran broadcaster Kwame Sefa-Kayi. The criticism comes following reports of Sefa-Kayi’s resignation as the long-time host of the popular “Kokrokoo” morning show on Peace FM, a subsidiary of the group.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on March 7, 2025, Justice Abeeku expressed disappointment with the handling of the situation. He accused Despite Media Group of abandoning Sefa-Kayi, who he believes was unfairly pressured into publicly apologizing to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on air.
He described the apology as a “spectacle,” stating that it was clear Sefa-Kayi had been coerced into making the public statement. “The day my dear brother Kwami Sefa-Kayi rendered apologies to NDC on live radio, I felt so sad for him because it was pretty obvious he was pressured into that,” Justice Abeeku wrote.
The former presidential staffer further emphasized that Sefa-Kayi had not wronged anyone and was merely doing his professional work, but was unfairly targeted by the NDC. He also expressed disbelief that Despite Media Group, instead of supporting Sefa-Kayi, allowed him to face undue criticism and pressure. Justice Abeeku went on to suggest that had he been in Sefa-Kayi’s position, he would have resigned to avoid the turmoil.
“It’s obvious that Peace FM is under the pressure of the NDC government, and they are failing to stand behind their own employee,” Justice Abeeku added. He also noted his surprise at some individuals, who, despite claiming to be loyal supporters of Sefa-Kayi, appeared to fault those empathizing with him.
As the situation unfolds, Justice Abeeku’s comments have sparked debate about the relationship between media houses and political pressure in Ghana. Many are now watching to see how Despite Media Group will respond to the ongoing controversy.
