The Aflao Traditional Council has expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his swift and compassionate response to the plight of some Ketu South residents affected by recent devastating tidal waves.
The President, immediately after delivering his Independence Day Anniversary speech in Accra on Thursday, traveled to Agavedzi, one of the coastal communities in Ketu South hardest hit by the recurring menace, to inspect the damage and present some items to alleviate the suffering of the victims.
Accompanying the President were his younger brother and Managing Director of Engineers and Planners, Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, and Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways, among others, who also made donations to support the tidal wave victims.
In a release on Saturday, March 8, signed by its President and Paramount Chief of Aflao, Torgbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, the Council stated that Mr. Mahama’s decision to leave the March 6 parade to personally visit and console the victims was a true demonstration of leadership, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians.
“His presence reassured the affected communities that they are not alone in this tough time and that their voices are heard.
We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for his exceptional generosity in donating GH¢100,000 to support the victims. This is yet another testament to his remarkable humanitarian spirit, which extends far beyond the shores of Ghana. His kindness and dedication to helping those in distress continue to inspire hope and bring relief to countless lives.”
“Furthermore, we acknowledge with deep appreciation the contribution of Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, who has provided 250 bags of rice to support affected families. We are equally grateful to all individuals, organizations, and well-meaning Ghanaians who have come forward in many ways to provide relief. These acts of kindness embody the spirit of unity, compassion, and shared responsibility that define us as a people,” the release added.
The statement also reminded the public that “while these immediate relief efforts bring comfort, we must not lose sight of the urgent need for a lasting solution to the recurring coastal erosion crisis,” which has recently displaced hundreds of people and destroyed livelihoods.
“We therefore use this opportunity to appeal for more support from the government, corporate bodies, development partners, and philanthropists to provide both emergency assistance and long-term measures to protect our vulnerable coastal communities.”
“In this moment of adversity, let us stand together in solidarity, extending a helping hand to those in need. The Aflao Traditional Council remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that our people receive the support they deserve,” the release concluded.
