Former Rector of GIMPA and respected economist, Professor Stephen Adei, has revealed that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo sent a team to personally appeal to him to accept the role of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Board Chairman because of his integrity.
“I’m neither NDC nor NPP. Amid the GRA chairmanship crisis, Akufo-Addo sent people to beg me to take up the GRA chairmanship role because of my integrity.” – Prof. Adei said on KeyPoint show on TV3
Speaking about his appointment, Professor Stephen Adei explained that despite the public perception of his political affiliation, he has always been a career public servant and non-partisan. He stated categorically that he is neither NPP nor NDC. Explaining his journey to the appointment at GRA, Prof Adei revealed that he worked in institutions such as the Ministry of Finance, the National Investment and Promotion Centre, the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP), GIMPA and others, all serving the public. He indicated that he was recruited into GIMPA when Rawlings was in power. He retired in 2008 when the NPP won the elections, which led to assumptions that he was politically aligned.
Prof. Adei disclosed that he accepted the GRA role as a national duty and did not benefit financially beyond his sitting allowance. “Working as a chairman of GRA, apart from my sitting allowance, I did not even receive a bicycle. My GHS4000 at sitting was more like a cost to me” he said.
He revealed that he took the appointment because Akufo-Addo sent people to come to his house and beg him to accept the role, emphasising that the country needed a person of integrity to address GRA crisis.
Prof. Adei’s comment come amid discussions about the leadership and integrity of key government institutions.
