In commemoration of the 2025, World Engineering Day the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), has made a call for Ghana to adopt a science-driven approach to national development.

In a statement themed “Unleashing the Power of Engineering to Advance the Sustainable Development Goals in Ghana,” IET-GH President Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng emphasized the need for a shift in mindset to maximize the benefits of engineering and technology.

“For Ghana to fully benefit from engineering and technology, we must embrace a long-term, science-driven development mindset.

“Engineering is the foundation of industrialization, and as a nation, we must prioritize technical expertise, innovation, and evidence-based decision-making over short-term political interests,” the statement said.

The statement highlighted several key areas for action, including creating an enabling environment for engineers through better resources and policies, and building strong institutions free from political interference.

“Unnecessary political interference in engineering-related projects weakens our ability to implement sustainable solutions,” Mr. Boateng noted, urging that decisions be guided by “technical expertise, research, and national interest.”

The president also addressed corruption as a major obstacle to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), calling for transparency and accountability in project execution.

He further advocated for competency-based education, support for local industries, and investment in homegrown engineering solutions, urging stakeholders to trust and invest in local engineering solutions over foreign alternatives.

The IET-GH President commended efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey) and encouraged President John Dramani Mahama to support engineering entrepreneurship through funding and policies that empower engineers to innovate.

“The future of our nation depends on how well we harness engineering and technology to address our challenges,” Boateng said.

The president concluded his statement with a rallying call on stakeholders to remove barriers and invest in a sustainable Ghana.

World Engineering Day, celebrated globally on March 4, recognizes engineering’s role in advancing sustainable development.
