On March 5, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin called on Dr. Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, to remain impartial and resist any political pressure. Afenyo-Markin, who represents the Effutu constituency for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), issued the warning during a parliamentary session, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the office.
Afenyo-Markin highlighted the pivotal role the Bank of Ghana plays in the country’s economic stability and growth, emphasizing that the position of Governor should be shielded from political influence. He urged Dr. Asiama to be cautious of any actions that could politicize the office, warning that such behavior could have serious consequences for the country’s economic governance.
Alongside his remarks on the Bank of Ghana, Afenyo-Markin also took aim at the Majority’s recent conduct in Parliament. He expressed concerns over what he described as attempts to bypass long-established parliamentary procedures. He accused the Majority of undermining legislative norms, which he argued could damage the credibility of the parliamentary process and set a dangerous precedent for future lawmakers.
Afenyo-Markin further warned that the erosion of parliamentary rules could have far-reaching implications for the nation’s democratic values and governance. He voiced frustration over the change in attitude among some Majority members, questioning how the respect for parliamentary procedure seemed to have diminished. His comments reflected concerns about the potential consequences of disregarding long-standing parliamentary traditions, which he believes are essential to maintaining order and accountability in the legislative process.
