Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has directed contractors working on the Ofankor to Nsawam road rehabilitation project to continue essential maintenance activities to provide relief for motorists.
Speaking to the media during an inspection of the project on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, he assured the public of the government’s commitment to securing funding to complete the project.
“The President is committed to continuing and completing every ongoing project, as long as the fiscal space and the necessary financing can be made available by the Finance Minister.
“We are committed to completing projects like this because it is a priority. So, we encourage the contractors and consultants to continue working to ensure that, in the meantime, essential maintenance activities continue. We don’t want a situation where, after we leave here, even the watering stops,” he stated.
Kwame Governs Agbodza acknowledged that the contractors had been absent from the site due to financial constraints that have delayed the project’s completion.
“They’ve run out of money, so we don’t expect them to be working at the same pace as before. However, the fact that they were almost absent from the site and today, we can see some of the public’s concerns being addressed, is progress.
“For instance, one of the major complaints was the lack of watering to reduce dust. Now, we can see significant watering taking place. There is also more clearing, reshaping, and rolling of the road surface, meaning the temporary conditions will be better than before,” he added.
The $350 million Ofankor-Nsawam road project is designed to improve transportation along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
Initially scheduled for completion in July 2024, the project now faces indefinite delays due to unresolved legal disputes and financial constraints.
