The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has launched the Ashanti chapter of its nationwide registration initiative, aimed at addressing complexities and curbing illegal mining practices.

This 21-day exercise, commencing in the Amansie West zone, seeks to distinguish between licensed and unlicensed miners, contributing to a more regulated sector.

Speaking at the launch in Antoakrom, National Communications Director, Razak Abdul Alhassan emphasized the need for public awareness regarding the diverse categories of miners.

He stated that the registration would differentiate between licensed operators, prospective miners, and those needing land, enabling effective formalization.

Alhassan also highlighted licensing disparities, noting that large-scale companies often access river bodies and forest reserves, while small-scale miners face restrictions.

He reaffirmed GNASSM’s commitment to advocating for miners’ rights within the existing legal framework, established in 1989.

On his part, the Ashanti district secretary, Michael Adu Gyamfi announced that the nationwide registration will improve monitoring and resource allocation for members.

He encouraged all interested small-scale miners to register at designated centers with appropriate identification.

He added that specific locations will be set up across various zones to ease the registration process, which is crucial for the association to support its members effectively.

This initiative is expected to foster understanding and collaboration, leading to a more sustainable and regulated small-scale mining industry across Ghana.

The Amansie West Zone Chairman, Joseph Mensah, urged members to participate in the registration exercise.

He explained that after Antoakrom, the team would move to other areas within the Amansie West zone, including Moseaso, Manso Nkwanta, and Mpatuam, to register the remaining members.

Meanwhile, some association members who registered and spoke to the media described the initiative as laudable and encouraged everyone to get involved.
