Former Black Stars defender John Mensah featured in the trends on social media after a video of his penalty miss in the 2010 World Cup resurfaced.
This was triggered by Bournemouth player, Dango Quattara, who scored a penalty similar to what Mensah missed against Uruguay in a quarter-final match of the 2010 World Cup.
Quattara moved slightly away from the ball, looked at the Wolves goalie, and hit a cheeky low shot to the right side of the post.
The goal reminded some social media users of Mensah’s penalty, where he placed himself in a similar position and shot the ball in a similar direction, only to be saved by the Uruguayan goalkeeper, contributing to Ghana’s painful elimination from the 2010 World Cup.
Some football fans criticized the former Black Stars captain for not shooting the ball with power and precision to beat the goalkeeper, as the Bournemouth player did.
Others argued that since he was a defender, he cannot be entirely blamed for missing such a crucial spot-kick.
The 2010 World Cup exit remains a painful memory in the minds of Ghanaians, who were saddened by the situation.
