Virgil van Dijk sends warning as Newcastle respond to Alexander Isak swap deal

Liverpool are in the midst of a brilliant campaign under new boss Arne Slot, with the Reds eyeing a remarkable treble.

Liverpool currently sit 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League, while they will take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on March 16. They are also set to meet Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League, with the first leg of their clash due to take place on Wednesday.

Liverpool have had a full week to prepare for their trip to Paris, having not been in action since they beat Newcastle 2-0 in the league last Wednesday. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest news from Anfield…

Van Dijk’s warning

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has warned his team-mates there is “no time for errors” when they take on PSG.

“I expect it to be a very good game over there against a very good team, a team in form,” Van Dijk said. “They played very well in the last Champions League game against Brest and it will be difficult. But these are the games you want to compete in and I’m really looking forward to it.

“Obviously you’re coming to the knock-out stages and there’s no time for errors, no time for bad games. There are two games to get through, but we want to be so good in both games that we deserve to go through. But you have to earn it, you have to fight for it, you have to do everything in your power to win the game and that’s what we’re going to try and do.”

Newcastle respond to Isak swap deal

Newcastle have dismissed talk of a player-plus-cash deal involving Alexander Isak and Darwin Nunez, claim the Newcastle Chronicle.

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs who have been linked with Isak and there had been reports they were set to include Nunez as a makeweight in a deal for the Sweden international. However, the report states that this has ‘been dismissed out of hand’ by Newcastle.

When asked about Isak’s future in October, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said : ” Alex’s got a long contract anyway and we have to be really careful regarding our spending due to PSR.We love him and are desperate for him to stay at Newcastle for many years and score loads and loads of goals for us, but I don’t see a short-term issue with his contract.”

Carabao Cup final boost

Liverpool have received a major boost ahead of the Carabao Cup final later this month, with Newcastle star Anthony Gordon set to miss the game through suspension.

Gordon was sent off after pushing Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in their FA Cup clash on Sunday and the forward will be suspended for the Carabao Cup final unless Newcastle successfully appeal the decision.

“I’m hugely disappointed for Gordon,” Howe said after the game. “He is a huge player and instrumental for us. We will review it, see what we make of it and make the next steps. I haven’t spoken to him individually.”
