Maame Ama Pratt, Press Secretary to Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, recently shared how her upbringing in a politically active household made her initially hesitant to enter politics, according to MyNewsGH.
As the daughter of veteran journalist and political activist Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Ama Pratt witnessed the struggles of political activism from a young age. In an interview on GBC’s Breakfast Show, she recalled seeing her father arrested and enduring various hardships, which made her reluctant to follow his path. “I was that child who understood too early what political activism really meant,” she said, remembering her father’s struggles. “I saw my father get arrested at dawn, taken away by soldiers.”
Despite this early exposure, Ama Pratt distanced herself from politics for much of her youth, with her household having an unspoken rule of “no politics here.” “I grew up wanting nothing to do with politics because of what I saw my father go through,” she said.
However, she eventually realized that avoiding politics wasn’t a solution. As she took on the role of Press Secretary, she acknowledged that it was time to become part of the solution rather than remain a bystander. “You either become part of the solution, or you remain a bystander,” she said.
Ama Pratt also discussed the challenges women in leadership face, particularly how the media and public often focus on their relationships to male figures rather than acknowledging their individual accomplishments.
