“If you know you will get injured and Ghana won’t take care of you, then resign from the national team”

Former Black Stars defender Sam Johnson has criticized Ghanaian players who complain about injuries and lack of support when representing the national team, urging them to take full responsibility for their choices.

His comments follow Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 21 years—a setback that has sparked widespread criticism of the team’s performance and commitment.

Speaking in an interview, Johnson expressed frustration over what he perceives as a lack of effort from players when they don the national jersey.

“For me personally, I know what they can do, but they don’t do it. They don’t show it to us when they come here,” he stated.

He was particularly unimpressed by complaints about injuries, arguing that such concerns should not deter players from giving their best.

“What kills me is when players say, ‘If I get injured, who will take care of me?’ Excuse me, but that is nonsense. This is your job, and this is what you chose to do,” Johnson asserted.

The former Ghana international further challenged players who are unwilling to accept the risks involved in playing for the national team to step aside.

“You either do it, or you leave it. So, if you know you will get injured and Ghana won’t take care of you, then resign from the national team or don’t come at all,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will return to action later this month in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, hosting Chad in Accra on March 21 before facing Madagascar in Morocco on March 24, 2025.
