In a bold move to integrate the creative arts into governance, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed six renowned entertainment personalities to key positions in his administration. These appointments reflect Mahama’s commitment to bringing fresh, creative perspectives into public service as part of his larger effort to reset the country’s cultural and tourism landscape.
Here are the six personalities and the roles they now occupy:
1. John Dumelo – Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture
The celebrated actor and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon now serves as Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture. With his background in farming and civil engineering, along with three master’s degrees, Dumelo brings a unique blend of practical experience and academic knowledge to the ministry.
2. Abla Dzifa Gomashie – Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts
A veteran actress and MP for Ketu South, Dzifa Gomashie returns to familiar territory, having previously served as Deputy Minister in the same ministry under Mahama’s earlier administration. With over four decades in the creative space and an MPhil in African Studies, she brings both passion and expertise to her new role.
3. Abeiku Santana – Deputy CEO, Ghana Tourism Authority
The celebrated broadcaster and tourism advocate steps into the Ghana Tourism Authority to help drive national tourism campaigns. Abeiku Santana’s deep knowledge of media, marketing, and tourism promotion, coupled with his work on campaigns like “Year of Return,” makes him a natural fit for this position.
4. Kofi Okyere-Darko (KOD) – Director of Diaspora Affairs
Known for his influence in fashion and media, KOD will now serve as Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President. His work promoting African creativity through events like ‘Rhythms on Da Runway’ positions him well to engage Ghanaians abroad.
5. Rex Omar – Presidential Staffer, Black Star Experience
The highlife legend takes on a cultural ambassador role, coordinating the Black Star Experience, a program designed to showcase Ghana’s creative excellence to the world.
6. James Gardiner – Deputy Executive Secretary, National Film Authority
Actor James Gardiner, with over a decade in film, will work to revitalize the local movie industry, ensuring Ghanaian films gain more recognition both locally and internationally.
