In a groundbreaking call for collaboration, legends of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club have reached out to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, urging him to actively involve former players in the development of young talent in the region. During a recent meeting held at the club’s headquarters, the importance of harnessing the wealth of experience among Kotoko’s ex-players was emphasized, addressing the future of football in Ashanti.

Kotoko prides itself on being one of the most celebrated clubs in Ghana, a country with a rich footballing heritage. With a history dating back to 1935, the club has produced some of the best football talents not just for Ghana, but for the world stage. However, as the dynamics of modern football evolve, the need for a structured approach to player development has become apparent, leading the legends to advocate for strategic involvement from influential figures like Dr. Amoakohene.

“Football is not merely a game; it is a community,” stated Kotoko legend and former international player, Abedi Pele. “Our knowledge and experience can bridge the gap between traditional methods and contemporary practices, but we need the support of key stakeholders, including the government, to create a robust system.” His sentiment was echoed by fellow players who shared stories of how they had transitioned from promising youth players to full-fledged professionals, attributing much of their success to mentorship and proper training.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in his response, expressed enthusiasm for the proposal and acknowledged the invaluable resources the legends represent. “We must leverage the expertise of these players,” he stated. “They have been through the ranks, faced challenges, and celebrated victories. Their input is crucial in crafting programs that nurture our youth and elevate the quality of football in the region.”

The meeting also emphasized the need for structured youth academies, where former players could take on mentorship roles, sharing both technical skills and life lessons with the aspiring young athletes. This initiative aims to combat the issue of scouting, wherein many talented players are often overlooked due to a lack of exposure and proper training facilities.

In the wake of increasing global competitiveness in football, it is critical for Ghana, particularly the Ashanti region, to establish a clear and strategic pathway for nurturing future talent. Kotoko’s legends are eager to collaborate with the Regional Minister, creating symbiotic relationships.
