Former Member of Parliament for Kumasi Suame and ex-Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) faced significant challenges leading up to the 2024 general election. Speaking in an interview with Nhyira FM, he revealed that public enthusiasm for their campaign had dwindled by mid-2024, indicating a difficult electoral outcome.
“Usually from Kumasi to Berkwai, people would meet you with euphoria, even if you are not in these convoys but with buses, they will run to meet and hail you, this time was different.” He noted. According to him, if the elections had been held in August 2024, the New Patriotic Party would have secured less than 30% of the votes.”
However, he acknowledged that situation started to improve towards December, as the economy showed signs of recovery and, their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia gaining more favourable public responses. He recalled a prominent man of God commending Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s humility and sincerity during one of their campaigns in Ashanti region.
Despite these efforts, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu admitted that the odds were against them from the beginning. The New Patriotic Party ultimately lost the elections to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.
