PRO of Charterhouse, Robert Klah
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Charterhouse, Robert Klah, has stated that the possibility of reinstating the Group of the Year category at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) remains uncertain.
His comments come after calls for the category’s return gained momentum following the impressive performances of groups like Dope Nation and Team Eternity Ghana (TEG) in the year under review.
However, during an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Klah stated that it is too early to confirm its inclusion, as the TGMA board has yet to assess entries and make a final decision.
“At the moment, I’m not in a position to say yes or no to the question because the board is yet to meet. The decision will be taken after an assessment of groups in the year under review,” he said.
He stated that Charterhouse has always been open to reinstating the category if the competition is strong.
“I want to set the record straight that Charterhouse has always said Group of the Year will be reinstated if it’s competitive,” he added.
The Group of the Year award has been absent from the TGMA since 2021, when gospel group, Bethel Revival Choir, won the title, beating notable groups like R2Bees, La Meme Gang, and Dope Nation.
Since then, despite consistent releases and performances from various groups, the category has not been featured, raising questions about the criteria used by the TGMA board.
This year, groups like Team Eternity Ghana and Dope Nation have dominated the airwaves with hits such as Defe Defe and Zormizor, reigniting calls for the category’s return.
Music duo Lali X Lola also addressed the issue in a letter to the TGMA board dated February 3, highlighting the resurgence of talented groups in Ghana’s music scene and urging the board to reconsider.
In response, Klah encouraged groups to explore other categories instead of limiting themselves to Group of the Year.
“Why do they want to limit themselves to just Group of the Year when they can file for other categories?” he asked.
He cited Team Eternity Ghana as an example, noting their eligibility for various gospel categories, including Most Popular, Artiste of the Year, and Collaboration of the Year.
“Same with other groups who may be doing other genres. They shouldn’t be restricted to just Group of the Year; they have many options by filing for other categories,” he added.
As the TGMA board prepares to review entries and finalise categories, stakeholders in the music industry await a decision on whether the Group of the Year award will make a comeback.
