The brother of veteran actor Mawuli Semevo has opened up about the tragic fire accident that claimed the renowned actor’s life.
In his account, Mawuli had returned from a TV3 interview, attended to some tasks, and gone to bed. However, later that night, he was woken by screams that prompted him to step out.
He recalled being shocked to see his brother’s house engulfed in flames, with thick smoke making it difficult to rescue him.
“He went to TV3 for an interview, worked on his laptop upon his return, and then slept. I rushed to his location and saw thick smoke. The house was in flames.
“I entered to assess the situation and then came out, assuming he had already made it to safety. That was when disaster struck, he was trapped as the fire’s intensity increased,” he said during an interview with One Ghana TV.
Despite his desperate attempt to save his brother, the situation had worsened by the time the Fire Service personnel arrived.
“I tied a rope to a nearby bed and threw it to him, telling him to hold on so I could pull him out. But it didn’t work. I assured Mawuli that help was on the way, as firefighters were en route. However, by the time they arrived, he had sustained severe burns on his limbs, face, and legs, leading to his demise,” he recounted.
Mawuli Semevo was reported to have died at Ridge Hospital on Thursday, February 20, 2025, while receiving treatment for burns sustained in the fire accident.
The gifted actor was renowned for his exceptional performances in both film and theater.
He played roles in movies such as A Stab in the Dark, Harvest at 17, Escape of Love, The Good Old Days: The Love of AA, and Like Cotton Twines.
