John Dramani Mahama, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin and the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills
The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has revealed how the late former President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills and the current President, John Dramani Mahama, supposedly saved his business in 2008.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 20, 2025, Afenyo-Markin recounted that after his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost the 2008 election, some individuals attempted to collapse his transport business.
However, he said that Prof. Mills, who was president at the time, and Mahama, who was vice president, intervened to ensure he could continue operating his business.
“I was in the transport business, and I had a lot of trucks plying Awaso to Takoradi. I was also a known NPP member. When the NPP lost, some people made it their mission to stop my trucks.
“One of the shareholders of the company was close to the government of the day. He informed the then-president and vice president, and they immediately gave instructions that such actions were not right for the country. They said that someone who had taken a loan to buy trucks for business should not be sabotaged simply because he was an NPP member,” he narrated.
The Minority Leader made these remarks while condemning the unfair treatment of members of opposition parties by those in government.
“As a country, we must not continue this vicious cycle of ‘you did it to me, so I will do it to you.’ Mr. Speaker, yesterday, I said in an interview that sometimes the political class forgets that their mandate is to develop the nation.
“But since 1992, it appears we have not learned our lesson… I am saying that some of the injustices Ghanaians face due to political affiliation must end,” he stated.
He added, “But will extremists allow moderate centrists in our political space to do their work and promote justice and fairness in society? We, the voices of reason, must prevail over them.”
