President John Dramani Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has failed to honour his campaign promise of ensuring that at least his cabinet is made up of 30% of women.
During the launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto for women ahead of the 2024 elections, then flagbearer John Mahama promised to ensure at least 30% of his cabinet positions will be filled by women if elected.
“I, together with the NDC I shall lead, offer you a social contract. Within the first 14 days of my presidency, I will nominate my Cabinet – 30% of whom will be women” Mahama said at the event held in Kumasi on Monday, September 30, 2024.
John Mahama emphasized the significant roles women play in Ghanaian society and the need for more women in decision making positions.
“Our mission is simple: Ghanaian women matter. Ghanaian women are partners in development. And our Party has put forward proposals to ensure that women sit at the table of national decision-making, side by side with men,” he said.
The Presidency after the first Cabinet meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2025 issued a statement announcing a 19-member Cabinet of the Mahama government.
But surprisingly, only two female ministers – Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, made the list of Cabinet ministers.
