These encroached lands are part of over 600 acres specifically demarcated by government
At least 88 acres of land belonging to the Air Force Base Command in Takoradi, Western Region, have been taken over by encroachers.
These encroached lands are part of over 600 acres specifically demarcated by the central government for the establishment and operations of the Air Force base.
According to the military command, the encroachment continues to impact their operational effectiveness.
Air Commodore Kwabena Kissiedu Manukure Atiemo disclosed this when he briefed the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, on the command’s operations, core mandate, and challenges.
He explained that the gradual and silent encroachment on military territory remains a significant challenge that must be addressed with urgency.
As a result, he appealed to the Western Regional Minister to collaborate with stakeholders to put an end to the ongoing land-grabbing activities within the military enclave.
In response, the Minister assured the command of his commitment to working closely with them to decisively tackle the perpetrators of these encroachments within military territory.
The soldiers noted that many prime lands bordering the Air Force base are under threat due to multiple factors, including human activities and illegal occupation.
According to Air Commodore Atiemo, the command aims to expand its operational zones while maintaining full control over lands designated for military use.
To achieve this, he said, they plan to restructure the area’s topography to safeguard the land, prevent disputes, and ultimately avoid legal battles.
The Minister assured the command of his full support in protecting these lands, particularly those located within primary operational areas.
The insatiable demand for land by residents in Adakope, Airport Ridge, and other communities surrounding the Air Force base has been a persistent challenge for the soldiers, according to the command.
The Minister emphasized the need for effective collaboration and communication among all key stakeholders, including the government, to address the growing encroachment issue.
Joseph Nelson later interacted with commanders, staff, and key stakeholders of the Air Force base.
He also toured several facilities within the base and inspected ongoing projects being undertaken by the command.
