AWS users in Ghana will face higher operational costs due to taxes
Effective March 1, 2025, businesses and individuals using Amazon Web Services (AWS) will be subject to various taxes and levies on the services they consume.
This means AWS users in Ghana will face higher operational costs.
AWS has announced that it is required to charge:
a. The National Health Insurance Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) Levy, and the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy (collectively totalling 6%).
b. Local Value Added Tax (VAT) at 15%.
In an official memo, AWS stated that these charges would apply to all customers in Ghana.
“From March 1, 2025, AWS EMEA will be issuing VAT invoices to AWS accounts located in Ghana for charges incurred from that date,” parts of the memo read.
AWS is the world’s leading cloud computing platform, providing businesses, governments, and individuals with essential computing power, storage, and networking services.
While this new directive ensures compliance with Ghana’s tax regulations, it could negatively impact Ghanaian companies relying on AWS for cloud services due to increased costs.
Meanwhile, businesses and individuals are advised to update their AWS accounts with their Tax Registration Number (TRN) before the deadline to facilitate VAT deductions.
