The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that it has received 700,000 blank cards to help address the backlog of National Identification Cards (Ghana Cards).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 18 February 2025, the NIA revealed that the cards were obtained through the efforts of its Acting Executive Secretary, Yayra Koku.
The NIA explained that the new cards would be used to print backlogs, including first issuance cards, replacement cards, and others.
“The National Identification Authority (NIA) wishes to inform the public that it received a total of 700,000 blank cards from its technical partners on Monday, 17 February 2025, following weeks of negotiations led by the Acting Executive Secretary. These blank cards will be used to print the backlog of records (first issuance, card replacements, and updates of personal information) that have been pending since 2023,” part of the statement read.
The NIA assured the public that the printing of these backlogs would begin as soon as possible, and the cards would be distributed to the public.
“In line with the government’s objective to ensure that all Ghanaians aged 15 and above have the Ghana Card for identification and verification purposes, the Acting Executive Secretary has formed a technical team to expedite the printing of the backlogs and oversee their distribution to district offices for issuance. The public will be notified in due course about when card issuance will commence at district offices across the country.”
The NIA also urged Ghanaians to collect the more than 600,000 Ghana Cards that have already been printed but remain uncollected at various regional and district offices since 2018.
